Asmodeus

Asmodeus

By Christopher Jon Luke Dowgin

"Bring in the prisoner!"

Chained in bright gold shackles etched with the sacred name of YHWH terminating in effigies of specters and demons is a man of not so uncommon stature or bearing. That is beyond the column of soldiers that have escorted him in. With the safety in numbers on their side, the were terse with their eyes. Never falling upon anything long enough to discern a grape from a mountain lion. But you got this feeling that each one of them was to become a grape for the lion. So when Solomon gave the order for them to leave bewilderment gave way to comfort as the column responded to their sergeant's curt call and filed out.

The man with the shackles prominent in front of him hung his head low and shrugged as a laugh escaped the corner of his lips that had been built up in the upper parts of his chest that was held especially to be released during these moments of irony like the radiator that held on too long.

" I see you bend your knee to the ineffable name of God!"

The man with the shackles of Iron looked to the sky with his head tilted sideways with his hands behind his back reaching for the ground. His hips gave way to a contrapposto and he looked down into the eye of the great poet of the Song of Songs.

"Are you not going to speak! Foul demon. Befouler of Matrimonial bliss. Humble yourself in my presence."

This demon in wooden shackles scratched his nose and contemplated his withering host. Keeping an eye on the son of David, he sat in one motion on top of crossed legs.

"Asmodeus, lover of Lilith and patron of all evil hosts that scour the night. "

"Don't mention her name please, it gives me a headache! Four months in a cave with that woman is enough to drive anyone batty. Some how I think batcaves in the future will become popular in the west, with another Adam who goes well, batty."

"What are you talking about host of nocturnal emissions."

"TV! You know your favorite fan will be a demon from Israel who will sleep with more women than one could ever comprehend. One that has a peculiar taste for platform shoes and spitting blood and fire when he is not insulting educated women on the radio."

"What!"

"Never mind. What do you want anyway!" said the man with shackles on his feet. "Befouler of matrimony? I have been known to ease the pain of continual denial by throwing cold water on ones lungs. Takes the breathe right out of the affair. Sometimes the only way to save a frog from boiling is to turn the temperature all the way up."

"What!"

"You know that is how the whole Eve thing came about. When they sedated Adam and removed his rib for DNA...."

"DNA?"

"Yes DNA, kind of the father of sperm. Sort of, but I got to keep Lillith occupied and distracted. At first the idea sounded great. Have you ever seen Lillith, who would not take this assignment. See we had to distract her until Adam got over her and bonded with Eve. But after three months, in between sex and copulation, I made the mistake of striking a conversation. My head is still splitting. 'If it don't please me to please you, it ain't happening!' and all. That laugh, I invented fellatio so I would not have to listen to it. I do not know if half of the demons were my agony of listening to her or her twisted psyche we gave birth to in that cave. I really like people, I never intended in opening that pandora's box. We should of sewed her up before I plunged deep within for hours upon days on end. From that moment forward, I swore I would do whatever I could to break up unhappy marriages to anyone who might of ever aggravated their spouse as much as she aggravated me. No one deserves that. As in Latin, demon means mental blockade. I see more myself as a liberator. After I get into your relationship, there is no way but to be liberated from what ails you."

Solomon looked down in surprise to find the golden shackles upon his own wrists.

"What bounds you old man. Is Sheba going back to Ethiopia? What happened to 'Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine' ?"

"That is my own affair, now set me free in the name of...."

"Ineffable, I know. Ok. Why do you think my nephew could help you? He gave her that ring with his name on it. But you think that kept him from sleeping with those woman disguised as cows and swans. Imagine he got that cows cave mistaken for hers. Imagine his surprise when those two women got hold of him after their heart to heart. Samael, poison tongue! Is that the ineffable name of he that should not be named. I am what I am! It sounded better coming from Popeye! Bad taste and all, handing down his lovers to his son."

Perplexed at this conversation which seemed to go nowhere. How was he King of the Jews ever to get an appropriate tabernacle built to house those 15 commandments. Granted no one knew more than 10 since Moses dropped that tablet, but his followers swept it up any hows. Now it sits in the ark with the rest, occasionally giving those entering or leaving the tent a nasty static shock. Some say that Sheba was leaving because she blamed it for kinking her hair after she spent fortunes on spikenard to have it straighten. He needed this demon to build him a great temple. Especially with negotiations with Tyre being sour.

"So what binds you old man. Why did you seek a stranger's bed? You think a queen in her own right would tolerate such actions. How about your own heart. Is not the guilt building even now? Free yourself old man before you build any housing for anything so sacred. The builders hands must be pure or else the axe and adze slips from ones hand into the leg."

"How do you see so much, foul demon?"

" Demon, look who is blocking the truth from his mind! The future is plain for me as dates that linger on your tongue from the morrow. No you thought you had power over me by knowing my name, but I have many to be and many gone by. Some lost and some on the lips of many. Of those to be will be Elijah and Jesus. Before Melchizedek and originating in Christ from above in the Plemora and not below. I sat at the tree when Eve was given the fruit and played counsel weighed on two sides. I will come in the end to break up the bride from her discontent of tedium and boredom that runs to apathy into malice. The Alpha and the Omega. I helped screw things up I can at least help fix it. You laughed at me crying at a wedding when the bridegroom was to die within the week and a man arguing over a pair of shoes when he would only tread on earth for no more than seven days. But you want me to build a temple that will fall twice. To build something I will tear down myself. Do not look to external praise, look within and free yourself. As you see I have. I suggest you do the same."

With that the demon disappeared in nothing no more dramatic than a desert breeze. Leaving the King bound behind.

In his place appeared a man recently from Tyre named Hiram looking bewildered with a trowel in his hand and a helmet on his head with an acquisition for a whole lot of cedar in the other.

How the Gospel Spread to Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the Uttermost Parts of the Earth

How the Gospel Spread to Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the Uttermost Parts of the Earth

By Dr. Shirley Cheng

The Gospel of Jesus Christ started out as a small spark in the Galilean hillsides nearly two thousand years ago, but rapidly blazed across all geographical barriers to become the world's most well-known Good News in the history of humanity. A brief overview of how the Gospel spread will not only empower us to be a part of its spread but will help us see that the Gospel is propelled by divine power.

The spread of the Gospel began with the Great Commission Jesus Christ gave His disciples prior to his ascension back to his Father's side in heaven: "Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you." (Matthew 28:19, 20, WEB) Since the spreading of the Gospel was a great responsibility the disciples had to fulfill, it required the power from the Holy Spirit. Thus, Jesus told His body of believers to "wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high." (Luke 24:49) With this power, they would be witnesses to Christ in "Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

The Spread of the Gospel in Jerusalem

Following their Master's instruction, the disciples waited in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit. When the day of Pentecost came, "they were all with one accord in one place. Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages," so non-Hebrew speaking Jews from various parts of the Roman Empire could understand them in their own languages (Acts 2:1-4).

The Spirit-empowered disciples immediately began working to fulfill the Great Commission. The apostle Peter was first to add new members to the church of Christ; the Holy Spirit enabled this uneducated fisherman to deliver an impromptu preaching so powerful and convicting that it converted three thousand people to Christianity on the same day (Acts 2:41).

In Jerusalem, new believers were constantly being added to the church of Christ, as Yahweh God enabled the apostles to perform many miracles, including the instantaneous healing of a man who was crippled since birth (Acts 3). The increase that the church experienced was so rapid that the Bible soon used "multiplying" to describe the growth: "the number of the disciples was multiplying." (Acts 6:1)

The Spread of the Gospel to Samaria

Great persecution soon rose against the body of Christ, and consequently, the believers were scattered "abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles." (Acts 8:1) Those who left Jerusalem took with them the Good News of Christ, spreading the Gospel outside their circle to Samaria for the first time. One such believer who spread the Gospel to Samaria was Philip, a deacon who was assigned to serve tables for widows (Acts 6:5).

In Samaria, Philip healed the paralyzed and the lame, and drove out demons from the possessed, all the while proclaiming to the Samaritans the Christ, whom the Samaritans joyously accepted (Acts 8:5-8). When the apostles in Jerusalem "heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:14-15)

While Philip was still ministering in Samaria, an angel from God said to him, "Arise, and go toward the south to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." (Acts 8:26) God had a greater mission for Philip: to minister to one individual, an Ethiopian eunuch, the secretary of the treasury for the queen of the Ethiopians (Acts 8:27). Unhesitatingly,Philip obeyed and on his way, met the eunuch, who was traveling home on his chariot from Jerusalem where he went to worship. Commanded by the Holy Spirit, Philip ran toward the chariot, and once he heard the Ethiopian official reading aloud from the book of Isaiah, he asked him, "Do you understand what you are reading?" (Acts 8:30) The official admitted that he needed help understanding the Scriptures and asked Philip to "come up and sit with him." (Acts 8:31) Sitting next to the Ethiopian in his chariot, Philip promptly preached about Jesus Christ, starting from the passage the man was reading: Isaiah 53:7-8:

"He was led as a sheep to the slaughter.
As a lamb before his shearer is silent,
so he doesn't open his mouth.
In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away.
Who will declare His generation?
For his life is taken from the earth."

As they traveled, they came upon some water, and the official said, "Behold, here is water. What is keeping me from being baptized?" (Acts 8:36) Once confirming the man's new faith in Christ, Philip baptized him in the water. Upon the completion of Philip's ministry to the official, the "Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the eunuch didn't see him any more, for he went on his way rejoicing." (Acts 8:39)

The Spread of the Gospel to the "Uttermost Parts of the Earth"

Following the spread of Christianity throughout Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, Jesus' Good News of universal salvation had to spread outward; no geographical barrier, either imaginary or real, could possibly hold it back. The spread of the Gospel to the gentiles had a modest start, but rapidly grew like a small amount of leaven in a lump of dough. Cross-cultural ministry officially began with the apostle Peter.

As a Jew, Peter was at first hesitant to preach the Gospel of Christ to non-Jews, as Jews at that time saw gentiles as unclean (ritually polluting). However, after a vision from the Christ, Peter accepted his mission to the gentiles. Immediately following the vision, three men were asking for Peter, and upon the Holy Spirit's prompting, Peter went to meet them. The men explained to Peter, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say." (Acts 10:22)

Once arriving at Cornelius' home, Peter introduced Jesus as the Savior of the world. While he spoke, the Holy Spirit came upon the gentiles and, as a result, they spoke in tongues, amazing all the witnesses (Acts 10:44-46). Then Peter had them baptized in water (Acts 10:48).

The spread of the Gospel to the gentiles continued following Peter's first cross-cultural ministry. Some of those who were persecuted preached the Word at faraway places, including Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, where the term "Christian" was first used to describe a follower of Christ (Acts 11:19, 21, 26).

Cross-cultural ministry flourished under Paul of Tarsus. On the day of his miraculous conversion from a devoted Pharisee who was vehemently persecuting Christians to a devout apostle who would become the pioneer of church planting, the Master said to him, "Arise, and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose: to appoint you a servant and a witness both of the things which you have seen, and of the things which I will reveal to you; delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom I send you, to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me." (Acts 26:16-18)

Paul was "not disobedient to the heavenly vision." (Acts 26:19) In his three Spirit-guided missionary trips throughout the Roman Empire, Paul won lives for Christ from many gentile worlds, including Malta, Cyprus, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Crete, and Rome, where his ministry ended due to execution and where the book of Acts of the Bible closes to open the door for further spread of the Gospel.

The Spread of the Gospel After the Book of Acts

After the close of Acts, the Gospel continued to spread despite great persecution. By the second century, it spread to nearly all of the Roman Empire, and in the fourth century, persecution ceased and Christianity became the dominant religion of the empire after Roman Emperor Constantine was converted to Christianity, and issued an edict of toleration in 313. Then through missionary work and colonization, Christianity spread throughout the western world in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, thousands of Christians spoke against the Roman Catholic Church for deviating from Biblical doctrines, for moral corruption, and for power abuse. Some of these reformers began making the Bible accessible to the common people by translating it into languages other than Latin, to which the sacred text was then confined. During such reformation, many reformers were persecuted and executed, including William Tyndale, who was burned at the stake in 1536 for smuggling copies of his English translation of the Bible into England after illegally printing them in Germany. Their efforts and sacrifice enabled many lay people to personally read and study the Bible on their own for the first time. The reformation was aided by the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, which allowed for mass production of the Bible.

In the eighteenth century, Christians sailed to the New World to seek religious freedom, bringing with them the Gospel to America. From that time onward to the 1900s, several revivalists rose up to radically evangelized the world; among them was William Booth, who founded the Salvation Army and established "Armies" in fifty-eight countries; James Hudson Taylor, the first missionary to inland China who converted tens of thousands of Chinese to Christianity; and John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist church who spread the Gospel throughout the United Kingdom.

Today, despite centuries of mass persecution, the burning of the Bible, and clergy power abuse, the Gospel continues to spread and penetrate geographical lines, fueled by technological advances. And when the "Good News of the Kingdom [is] preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations... the end will come." (Matthew 24:14) Amen!

What Are the Hindrances to Prayers?

What Are the Hindrances to Prayers?

By Dr. Shirley Cheng

When you pray, do you feel that Yahweh God Almighty is ignoring your prayer? After all, prayer is communication with Yahweh; it is a two-way conversation. So when it seems as though your prayers are not being answered, there may be good reasons for it.

There are hindrances to prayers--things and behaviors that will prevent an answered prayer. Here, let us briefly go over some of these hindrances, so we can learn to eliminate them in our lives.

Disbelief

"But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:6-8, WEB)

When we pray to Yahweh, we need to have the right heart attitude of belief. Yahweh is Almighty, and His very name means "He who chooses to become," meaning that He has the ability and power to be and do anything He wants. When we ask for something yet doubt whether He can grant the request, we are treating Him as though He lacks the power to do what we ask for.

Not praying according to God's will

Jesus, God's Son, taught us to pray: "Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth." (Matthew 6:10)

We need to pray for Yahweh's Kingdom to come and desire for His will to be fulfilled on Earth, as it is in His heavenly home. His Kingdom encompasses His entire will for us.

When we pray without taking God's will into account, we are praying with the wrong motives: "You ask, and don't receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures." (James 4:3)

We must seek God's Kingdom first; make it our number one priority. His Kingdom is the answer to all of our needs, and it's the solution to all of our problems. When His Kingdom comes, we will have everything. Jesus promised: "But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things [material necessities] will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33)

Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is like any relationship between earthly parents and their child. Not everything a child asks for will be granted by his parents. The parents answer requests based on their will and promises. This is done in everyone's best interest. Likewise, Yahweh grants our wishes only according to His will and His promises for us. Rest assured, His will for us is purely good.

Before we can ask according to God's will, we obviously need to know what His will is, don't we? So where can we find out? Why, in the Bible, of course! Pick up a copy of the Bible, read and study it. Take note of God's will and promises, and then pray according to them. (And if you need help in studying and understanding the Bible, just reply to this newsletter and I'd be more than glad to be your Bible study buddy!)

Not remaining in Jesus and his words

We know that we need to seek the will of God, and part of that will is for us to remain in Him and His Son. "Remaining" in God and Jesus is living in them by doing their will, following their teachings and words. When we ask for something and don't do what Yahweh desires, it shows that we are asking for selfish reasons, without taking God's will into consideration.

Jesus promised us: "If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you." (John 15:7)

Not praying in Jesus' name

Jesus told us to pray in his name: "Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son." (John 14:13)

"Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full." (John 16:23, 24)

Praying in the name of Jesus does not merely mean that we conclude our prayers with, "In the name of Jesus Christ I pray." Rather, it also means to pray with the qualities of Jesus Christ, as "name" also denotes someone's characteristics and essence. We are to be Christ-like when we go before Yahweh in prayers: humble, faithful, and loving.

Praying hypocritically

Jesus denounced those who pray just to show off: "When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward." (Matthew 6:5) Hypocrites will receive the reward they long for--praise from man--but they will not receive the reward of true value: that comes from God.

In order for our prayers to be answered by Yahweh, we must pray in humility, truthfully and sincerely from our hearts, and according to the truths of God as presented in the Bible. We should pray in secrecy: "But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." (Matthew 6:6)

While praying, we should be earnest, without using meaningless repetition, such as memorized prayers, chants or mantras: "In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him." (Matthew 6:7-8)

Not forgiving others

Is it right to ask God to forgive our sins when we don't forgive others ourselves?

Jesus told us to pray: "Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors." (Matthew 6:12)

So before we pray, we should achieve a peaceful mind and hold no grudges in our hearts. When we forgive the wrong that has been done to us, we will be able to ask God's forgiveness for our own wrongdoing, for "if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." (Matthew 6:14)

Selfishness and lack of compassion

"Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he will also cry out, but shall not be heard." (Proverbs 21:13)

Mistreatment of your marriage partner

"You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered." (1 Peter 3:7)

Pride

"There they cry, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men." (Job 35:12)

Sin of any kind

As you can see, any sin keeps you from receiving an answer to your prayer from Yahweh.

"Behold, Yahweh's hand is not shortened, that it can't save; neither his ear heavy, that it can't hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear." (Isaiah 59:1-2)

Yahweh said: "When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow." (Isaiah 1:15-17)

"He who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination." (Proverbs 28:9)

"The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight." (Proverbs 15:8)

Therefore, before God answers our prayers, we must eliminate any and all sins from our lives. How can we avoid and treat sins? We do it through the born-again experience.

Demonic hindrances

While sins are a major blockade to prayers, the righteous--those who whole-heartedly devote their lives to seeking God's will--can experience delayed answers to their prayers due to Satanic hindrances. For example, the great prophet Daniel did not receive God's answer for his prayer until twenty-one days later because of demonic hindrances:

"Daniel, you man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for am I now sent to you... Don't be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard: and I have come for your words' sake. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me: and I remained there with the kings of Persia." (Daniel 10:11-13) The one speaking to Daniel here was an angel. Since only spiritual beings could hinder an angel, we know that the "prince of the kingdom of Persia" was an evil angel which we call a "demon."

The apostle Paul reminded us: "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)

Yes, our main enemies are the demonic forces--evil spirits who do the will of their leader, Satan the devil. Satan and his followers do anything they can to go against Yahweh. From Daniel's experience, we can see that Satan has organized his evil force in the form of "principalities," where a demon rules over one specific region of Earth, like the "prince of the kingdom of Persia" mentioned in the book of Daniel. This is the "principalities" Paul spoke of.

Therefore, we must be strong, hold steadfast to our faith, and constantly rely on God to help us ward off the evil spirits. We must be persistent in our prayers. Jesus urged us to persistently pray to God. (Luke 18:1-8)

Jesus promised: "Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened." (Matthew 7:7-8)

So keep on asking, seeking, and knocking according to the will of Yahweh, and He will answer you in His due time!

One final word...

Many times, Yahweh answers our prayers not exactly in the way we expect. Sometimes, we may not even realize He has answered us. Other times, He will not answer us when our wishes conflict with His will. But Yahweh will always do what is best for us. So even though we don't get everything we want, we will always, always get the best.

And the best of the best is a sacred, intimate relationship with Yahweh. Pray that you will develop such a relationship with Him. Seek His face, and you shall find Him!

Yahweh said: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

The Life of Jesus Christ, A Bird's Eye View

The Life of Jesus Christ, A Bird's Eye View

By Carl Michaelis

To summarize the life of Jesus Christ in an article is an impossible task. Entire books have been written on specific aspects of Jesus life or death and I for one would not presume to have it all in this one article. What I am going to do is give a bird's eye view of the life of Jesus Christ, without going into the deeper meanings (and different interpretations) of his life on earth.

The earliest records of the life of Jesus are those written by his followers in the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There exist also first- and second- century Jewish and Roman accounts of his life. Roman historian, Tacitus, referred to the crucifixion of Jesus. Josephus, a Jewish historian, wrote of the teachings of Jesus as well as his miracles.

Jesus was born to Mary, a devout Jewish woman and to Joseph, a carpenter. The Gospels of Luke and Matthew say that Jesus was, however, conceived by a miraculous intervention of the Holy Spirit. The writings also tell that Jesus was born in Bethlehem where Joseph and Mary traveled because of a decree from Rome. Caesar Augustus was ruler, and Rome was the capital of the civilized world. In order to fulfill census requirements, all families had to register in their hometowns. Joseph, a descendant of the great King, David, was thus required to register in Bethlehem.

When eight days passed, the child Jesus was circumcised, and was named Jesus because an angel had given him this name before birth. He grew up in Nazareth, a small foothill village in the of Galilee (northern province of Israel).

Little has been written of the childhood of Jesus, except that when he was twelve, his parents found him astounding the elders by his teaching in the Temple.

Jesus began his public ministry when he was thirty years old. Along with preaching about the afterlife and salvation, Jesus is also said to have performed many miracles and healings. His first recorded miracle was at a wedding feast in Cana. Rather than see the bride and groom embarrassed that the wine for their celebration ran out, Jesus, at the urging of his mother, turned the water in the jugs into fine wine.

Other miracles included the feeding of 5,000 people who came to hear him teach using only a few loaves of bread and fish. It is said that those who approached him for healings needed to display faith in him; e.g., Jesus asked a man seeking healing for his son if he indeed believed that Jesus could do this.

Jesus gave many sermons, one of the most famous is referred to as The Sermon on The Mount. This was a short teaching on morality, stressing love of God and love of neighbor. He also used a story-telling method called parables. In these parables Jesus used teaching-stories which centered around every day life of the time, such as changes in nature or the goodness in a stranger and a despised foreigner (the Good Samaritan).

Jesus' mission was not political. His message was that He came to free men and women from their sins. He gained many followers during his lifetime and attracted crowds. But soon attitudes would change toward him. His teachings offended the political and religious leaders of his day.

During his final week on earth, Jesus would arrive in triumph is Jerusalem on Sunday. Monday, he would display righteous anger by chasing the moneychangers from the Temple. Tuesday he taught about obligations to government and religion. He spoke of the generosity of a widow who gave her last money to charity. He made predictions about his death. Unknowingly, He was anointed for burial on Wednesday by a repentant woman while in Bethany. He shared his final meal (Last Supper) with his disciples on Thursday. This was the Day of Preparation for the Passover. At that time he showed humility by washing his disciples' feet. At the meal, he received the kiss of betrayal from his apostle, Judas. Before his arrest, Jesus prayed alone--and agonized on the Mount of Olives, near Jerusalem, while his disciples slept nearby.

About 30 A.D., on Friday Christians call good, Jesus was crucified. Christians believe he willingly gave us his life to redeem souls and open the gate of heaven to all. Gospel accounts assert that he later on rose from the dead. Many centuries later, Christians believe Jesus was the saviour of the world and also believe that he was the son of God.
